How Travel Can Refresh Your Mind, Body & Spirit
Have you ever wondered if we were really meant to stay in one place our whole lives?
There is something about looking beyond the familiar. A new road, a different landscape, a new culture, a different language, or simply meeting someone whose life is completely different from yours can awaken something inside us.
Maybe that is one of the reasons human beings have always explored.
Travel is not just about taking pictures, checking places off a list, or saying, “I have been there.” Sometimes, travel gives us something much more valuable. It gives us a chance to step away from our routines and see the world—and sometimes ourselves—with fresh eyes.
For me, travel has always been connected to something deeper. I was born in Tanzania, and today I live in Nebraska. I have experienced what it means to leave one familiar world and build a life in another. That experience has taught me that sometimes you have to leave what you know to truly appreciate where you came from—and to discover where you might be going.
Travel for Your Mind
Our everyday routines can become comfortable. We wake up, go to work, come home, take care of responsibilities, and do it all over again.
There is nothing wrong with routine. But sometimes our minds need something different.
Travel introduces us to new sights, sounds, foods, languages, traditions, and ways of looking at life. You may find yourself asking questions you never thought about before.
Why do people live this way?
Why is this tradition important to them?
What can I learn from this culture?
And sometimes the biggest question becomes:
What have I been missing by only seeing the world from my own perspective?
You don't have to travel halfway around the world to experience this. Even visiting somewhere you've never been can give your mind a fresh perspective.
Travel for Your Body
Travel can get us moving.
Walking through a historic town, hiking a mountain trail, exploring a national park, taking a boat along the coast, or simply spending more time outdoors can get us away from the chair, the car, and the television.
A safari is a great example.
You might wake up before sunrise, climb into a safari vehicle, spend hours exploring the landscape, stop to stretch your legs, and spend the evening watching the sun disappear over the horizon.
It may not feel like a workout—but you're experiencing the outdoors, moving around, breathing fresh air, and giving your body a break from the normal routine.
And sometimes that's exactly what we need.
Travel for Your Spirit
This might be my favorite reason to travel.
There are moments when you stand somewhere completely different from home and realize just how big this world really is.
Maybe you're watching the sunrise over the Serengeti.
Maybe you're standing at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Maybe you're sitting on a beach in Zanzibar listening to the ocean.
Or maybe you're sitting in a small village talking with someone whose life is completely different from yours.
Those moments can make you slow down.
They can make you appreciate life.
They can remind you that there is more to the world than our daily worries.
For me, that is where travel can touch the spirit.
Travel Can Change the Way We See People
One of the beautiful things about traveling is realizing that people everywhere have many of the same hopes.
We want our families to be healthy.
We want our children to have opportunities.
We want to laugh, celebrate, work, build something, and enjoy our lives.
Our languages, foods, traditions, and circumstances may be different, but those basic human connections can be surprisingly familiar.
When we travel, we don't just see another country.
We meet people.
And sometimes those people change the way we see the world.
Godlove's Journal
When I was growing up in Tanzania, I remember seeing visitors from Europe coming to climb Mount Kilimanjaro or go on safari.
As a young boy, I didn't necessarily think of travel the way I do today. But I noticed these visitors coming from far away to experience a place that was simply home to me.
Years later, I would leave Tanzania and come to the United States.
Today, when I think about those memories, I see them differently.
What was ordinary to me was extraordinary to someone else.
And what is ordinary to someone in Nebraska may be extraordinary to someone in Tanzania.
That is one reason I believe travel is so valuable.
Sometimes we need to see our own world through someone else's eyes.
You Don't Have to Go Far
Travel doesn't have to mean spending thousands of dollars or flying across the ocean.
It can be a weekend road trip.
It can be visiting a town you've never explored.
It can be trying food from another culture.
It can be taking a hike you've never taken.
And yes, sometimes it can mean packing your bags and flying to another continent.
The important thing is to remain curious.
Keep exploring.
Keep learning.
Keep meeting people.
Keep seeing what is beyond the familiar.
Because the world is a big place, and there is a lot of life between where we start and where we finish.

Swahili Word of the Day 🇹🇿
Safari — Journey / Travel
The word “safari” actually comes from Swahili, where it means journey or travel.
And perhaps that is the perfect word for what we're talking about.
A safari isn't only about seeing animals.
It is a journey.
A journey through a new place.
A journey into another culture.
And sometimes, a journey into a new version of yourself.
So, why should we travel to see the world?
Maybe because we weren't meant to spend our entire lives seeing only the same horizon.
There is a big world out there.
Go see some of it.
Go meet its people.
Go experience its beauty.
And when you come home, you may discover that you see your own home a little differently too.
Karibu Tanzania — your adventure is waiting.
